Law enforcement in Sacramento are probing a shooting that took place on the evening of April 18 at the Howe Community Park area just as law enforcement were breaking up a large unauthorized gathering of an estimated several hundred individuals.
How It Started
Law enforcement were first called to the Arden-Arcade park just after 6:30 PM after learning of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. Following that, a second call came in about a reported physical confrontation breaking out near the park.
Aerial units was sent to survey the area but was unable to locate the reported altercation. However, deputies found that a massive group had gathered without authorization without permission.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Officers worked to read more disperse the crowd by positioning themselves around the crowd and broadcasting over loudspeakers instructing the hundreds present to vacate the area. About 15 minutes were given for attendees to disperse.
Just as the crowd began to move that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition echoed through the night. The rapid succession of shots caused mass panic. Officers swiftly started locating gunshot victims.
Four Victims Hospitalized
Altogether, four people were discovered with shooting injuries. The four individuals — consisting of one woman and three men all believed to be in their 20s — were brought to nearby hospitals. Emergency physicians reported that two had critical injury classifications, one sustained moderate wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. Thankfully, all four were in stable condition.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District provided support and provided medical assistance the four victims on location.
What Investigators Found
The center of the incident appears to have occurred near the Cottage Way corridor close to the local Home Depot situated at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Law enforcement investigators identified extra shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Ballistic damage were observed in the iron perimeter fence bordering the nearby Home Depot. This evidence indicated that a shooter had been firing southward from Cottage Way aimed at the Home Depot store. The Home Depot was temporarily locked down for a period of time. Crime scene technicians and detectives stayed at the location for hours.
Suspect Information
Details gathered through law enforcement radio communications indicated that a Kia vehicle had been detained in nearby Solano County. Four people were stopped and detained. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were heading to pick up the four detainees to bring the suspects back for further questioning. Video that was reviewed showed that two individuals had fired weapons.
